We have a great video online that shows how to strap your cushion to a dining room chair using the legs of the chair. This can also be similarly used with office chairs without seat back spacers.

No. This straps onto whatever chair you are sitting in.

This does not directly contact your tailbone if positioned correctly however, once your natural curve is restored using the Backbone cushion, the tailbone should have decreased pressure on it as your pelvis rolls forward. For added relief, the Backbone Cushion can be paired with a Backbone sacral-relief cushion.

Yes! It brings you out of the concavity of most car’s bucket-style seats and allows more room for your head to sit over your shoulders instead of your head being pushed forward by the headrest. This is particularly evident for those of us who wear ponytails.

Yes. The Backbone Cushion is specially designed to support between the shoulder blades without blocking movement of the shoulders

It has not been designed specifically for this but some clients have reported comfort and relief when placing it between their shoulder blades while lying on their backs to assist with passive stretching and relaxation of the chest muscles, especially with chest or abdominal surgeries that have secondary scar tissue.

The cushion is 2-2.5” thick with medium compression to allow for the space to be filled in between your shoulder blades without pushing you too far forward. The foam also comes more stiff when it is new but conforms to your specific support needs as it gets used.

Yes! This is when is helps the most because bucket seats tend to force us into a C-type posture. Using the Backbone Cushion behind you allows your body to naturally come out of the rounded posture of the bucket seat and have support where it’s most needed. This also helps to bring you closer to your steering wheel without having to shorten your leg length.

Yes.  The support of the Backbone Cushion through the middle of your spine allows your head and neck to come back over your shoulders which is your ideal natural alignment. Being out of this alignment can cause your head to “feel like” it weighs 2-3x more than it should causing headaches, neck and shoulder pain, pinched nerves and disc problems.

No. The insert is made from superior grade 1834 medium-high density foam and meets CAL 117-2013 which is a State of California requirement that ensure minimum safety test procedures and outcomes for testing the Smolder Resistance of Materials Used in Upholstered Furniture.  Foam is measured by two standards: density and compression. Density refers to the amount of material in one cubic foot of foam; the more dense the product, the more the cubic foot will weigh. Compression refers to the amount of force required to compress that cubic foot by 25 percent. The two figures together describe the softness to hardness of the foam.

  • For example, a 1834 rated foam is 1.8 pounds per cubic foot and requires 25 pounds of pressure to compress it 25 percent.
  • As a back support cushion, not a cushion that is sat on, this may feel hard to begin with depending on your body weight since leaning back doesn’t create the same pounds of pressure as sitting on a cushion.  It is often found in commercial products such as furniture seating, camper cushions, camper mattresses, bolsters and window seats.

Yes, when strapped to the backrest of your office chair, this will support your upper back and create the natural curve to bring your hips and shoulders back into alignment to reduce postural stressors found when sitting at your computer.  However, how we sit and the set up of our computer space is also a contributing factor. For all to work with maximal efficiency together, an good office ergonomic set up is crucial.

Yes. We offer complimentary 15 min ergonomic set ups to each customer who purchases one of our Backbone Cushions.  Should you need a more in-depth ergonomic assessment of your entire work-space, we also have this available for a nominal fee.

No, the cushion does not have a removable cover but we do offer additional cushion cover options.

Yes, depending on how soft or broken-in the recliner is, the cushion can provide extra support to the upper and lower back but may not be sufficient if the backsupport is extremely soft.

The cushion works well in wheelchairs to give extra support where the sling-back tends to push patients into a slumped posture without it.
