How texting is impacting our children’s health

It’s rare to think of our children as having neck pain or back pain. We normally associate these conditions with aging or poor posture as we become more sedentary with working or aging. Know what else is rare? It’s now a rare occurrence that you see someone without a smart phone.

Poor posture on phones

Billions of people are now walking around hunched over checking emails, checking social media, or texting. Text neck is REAL. It’s a new documented condition whereby the constant looking down at our phones can cause neck pain, back pain and real spinal issues. The problem (thought it’s obvious) is that this doesn’t happen immediately. Like everything else that we experience with our posture, these insults hit us slowly. So slowly that we don’t even know we have bad posture until it’s too late.

A new study shows:

“Text neck”, as some are calling this neck pain condition, happens when you’re repeatedly stretch and pull your neck which naturally causes the neck to become inflamed over time. This inflammation can lead to pinched nerves, herniated discs, and deformities to your neck’s natural curve. The forward neck posture is also linked to headaches, neurological problems and even heart disease. You might think, well, my kids are too young to experience these aging afflictions but you’d be wrong. The new generation of kids are having these problems earlier and more severely than any of our previous generations. It’s never too early to think about posture correction.
